Nach einem Angriff deutscher Jäger fiel das Flugzeug hinter die Bomberformation zurück und kollidierte dabei beinahe mit einem anderen US-Bomber. Raketen trafen die Flugzeugnase und lösten Feuer aus. Das Flugzeug ging auf Tiefe und explodierte nach dem Aufprall am Boden. Fünf Crewmitglieder kamen dabei ums Leben.
