The excavations of Tell el-Daba started in 1966 under the direction of Manfred Bietak. In the years 1966-1969, 1975-1985 and again in 1997, 2009 and 2011 excavations were carried out at the actual Tell in the areas A/I, A/II and A/N. Further excavations followed in areas A/III (1967, 1987, 1988), F/I (1979-1989), E/I (1979), A/V (1987-1988), H/I-VI (1989-2007), A/IV (1990-1991, 2000), R/I (1996), F/II (2006-2011) and R/II (2008-2009). Due to the Arab-Israeli war, the excavations at Tell el-Daba were interrupted from 1969 to 1975. During this period work was carried out in Assasif, Thebes West.
Manfred Bietak lead the excavations from 1966 to 2009 as excavation director, and worked as the director of the branch office of the ÖAI Cairo from 1973-2009. His representatives on site were Josef Dorner from 1981-2003 and Irene Forstner-Müller from 2003-2009, who took over the management of the excavation and the Cairo branch in 2009. From 1989-2001 Peter Janosi was employed as excavation assistant for Tell el-Daba at the University of Vienna. The excavations were carried out by the University of Vienna from 1966-1973. In 1973 the ÖAI took over the excavations in Tell el-Daba. With a few exceptions, work at Tell el-Daba was carried out twice a year, with most excavations taking place in spring (2-3 months), while in autumn (2-3 months) the material was processed. |
