The collection contains the digital copies and metadata for approx. 1,600 letters from the epistolary correspondence of the Habsburg Empress Eleonora Magdalena of Palatinate-Neuburg (1655–1720). These are 1,151 handwritten letters from the empress to her father Philipp Wilhelm of Palatinate-Neuburg (1615–1690) and her brother Johann Wilhelm of Palatinate-Neuburg (1658–1716). In addition, 56 letter drafts or copies of letters from her father and 381 drafts or copies of letters from her brother to the empress are recorded. The collected material thus documents only a fraction of the much more extensive epistolary correspondence of the empress. With over 3,300 pages, it nevertheless represents the most comprehensive collection of letters from a Habsburg woman dated before Maria Theresa. The letters preserved today in the Bavarian State Archives in Munich show a varied array of content; their topics range from pregnancy and health to music and hunting at court to diplomatic negotiations and the wars involving the Holy Roman Empire and Europe in general in the decades around the turn of the 18th century. Most importantly the empress's letters clearly reveal her agency in relation to dynasty, rule and European politics and show her to be an informed and strategic female political actor.
